		<description>Roles didn't come from Smalltalk.  Smalltalk traits don't have state, for example.  Now it's true that I used the Smalltalk traits paper to explain why we needed roles in Perl 6, but I'd already had them in mind way before I read the paper.  At best, it's a case of simultaneous discovery.</description>

OO has design strategies both built in and as part of its surrounding culture. It was those strategies and techniques which I was missing while up to my elbows in arbitrarily referencing and dereferencing variables for no very apparent reason...</description>
